Indira Gandhi jailed us, but never called us ‘traitors’… Know what Lalu Yadav said on Emergency

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi announced the imposition of Emergency in the country in June 1975. Vigorous anti-emergency agitations took place in Bihar under the leadership of Jaiprakash Narayan and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and former Chief Minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad participated in the agitation and was the coordinator of the movement’s steering committee. During the Emergency, Lalu Prasad opposed the Emergency and even went to jail. After the agitation, Lalu Prasad Yadav emerged as a prominent face in Bihar politics. He said the former prime minister jailed opposition party leaders, but never called them traitors or anti-nationals.

On the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, the Modi government brought a censure motion in the special session of the 18th Lok Sabha and hit out at the Congress. After that, the discussion regarding the emergency has again intensified. Amidst this discussion, Lalu Prasad on Saturday expressed his opinion about the days of emergency of 1975-77.

Lalu was in jail for 15 months

He wrote that he was the convenor of the steering committee formed for the anti-Emergency movement under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan and was imprisoned under MISA for more than 15 months.

Lalu Yadav said that at that time his colleagues and even he did not know about many BJP ministers who are talking about Emergency today. who is currently lecturing on independence. They did not even hear about Modi, JP Nadda and some other cabinet colleagues of the Prime Minister.

Never called us traitors: Lalu

The former CM of Bihar said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imprisoned several opposition party leaders including him, but he never misbehaved. The former prime minister never called those people traitors or anti-nationals.

He never allowed the memory of Babasaheb Ambedkar, the framer of our constitution, to be defiled. He wrote that 1975 is a stain on our democracy, but we should not forget who does not respect the opposition in 2024.

On June 25, 1975, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a 21-month emergency. It was removed on 21 March 1977. But he was defeated in the elections and Janata Party became the government in the country. Both Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi lost the elections from Rae Bareli and Amethi respectively.
