We are talking about the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which is considered to be the first and oldest expressway in the country. It was built in 2002 by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This highway connects Mumbai to Pune, which is one of the busiest cities in Maharashtra. You will be surprised to know that this is also the first 6-lane highway in the country.
It costs a lot
The cost of construction of this highway in the country was about Rs 1,63,000 crore. Its length is just 94.5 kilometres. This highway starts from Kalamboli area in Navi Mumbai and ends at Kivala in Pune. It has not been constructed by NHAI but by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation. Three-lane concrete service lanes have also been constructed on both sides of this highway.
A 3 hour trip is completed in 1 hour
With the opening of this expressway, the travel time between Mumbai and Pune has been reduced from 3 hours to just 1 hour. The Mumbai-Pune expressway has also increased the number of people travelling between the two cities on a daily basis. The beauty of this expressway which crosses the Sahyadri mountain range is worth seeing. Tunnels and underpasses have been constructed to cross this mountain. The speed of the expressway is 100 kilometres per hour.
How much is the toll tax?
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is the most expensive expressway in the country. Here, one has to pay a toll of Rs 336 for a one-way car. In this regard, the toll per kilometre on this expressway is around Rs 3.40. If we look at the average toll rate on other expressways in the country, it is around Rs 2.40 per kilometre. In this regard, those travelling here have to pay one rupee more for every kilometre.
