Mahatma Gandhi started the Non-Cooperation Movement on 1 August 1920. On 4 February 1922, villagers gathered with farmers outside Chauri-Chaura police station in Gorakhpur regarding this movement. At the same time, the British government was troubled by Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent movement. A large number of people had arrived. Meanwhile Chauri-Chaura inspector Gupteshwar Singh arrested many people including Bhagwan Ahir and threw them in jail. The mob clashed with the police station official, whereupon the enraged mob set fire to the police station. 23 policemen were burnt alive in this incident.

Gandhi was sentenced to 6 years in prison

Angered by the burning of 23 policemen alive in the Chauri-Chaura incident, Mahatma Gandhi announced the withdrawal of the Non-Cooperation Movement on 12 February 1922 and decided to fast for 5 days. Gandhiji said that he was “ready to suffer even death to save the movement from turning violent.” The withdrawal of this movement also affected Gandhiji’s popularity. Gandhi was arrested on 10 March 1922. Also, Judge Broomfield sentenced Gandhiji to 6 years in prison. However, due to health problems, he was released on 5 February 1924.

19 people were hanged in Chauri-Chaura incident

After the Chauri Chaura incident, the British arrested 225 people, where 173 were sentenced to death. After an appeal in the High Court, 19 people were found guilty. He was also hanged. The allegation was that these people incited people to turn non-violent agitation into violence. In the year 1973, a 12.2 meter long minaret was constructed by forming the Chauri-Chaura Shaheed Smarak Samiti. The British designated the Chauri-Chaura police station as a police monument in the year 1924. Later, the Government of India built a separate Shaheed Memorial in memory of the martyrs. What we know today as the main martyr’s memorial.
