The government will introduce the Digital India Bill to tackle deepfakes. Provisions will be made in this bill to address all rumors spread through digital platforms. In this regard, freedom of expression will also be taken into account. The government will also work to control the half-truths cleverly spread on YouTube.

The Data Protection Bill is approved

The ‘Digital Personal Data Protection Bill’, which strengthens data security in India, has already received Cabinet approval. Due to lack of strict laws in India until now, companies used to compromise users’ data and use it for other purposes without their permission.

Strict provisions have been made in the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill for companies that violate regulations related to data privacy or security. Under the bill, a fine of up to Rs 500 million can be imposed on companies for violating the rules. Since there is no strict law in the country, companies that possess data take advantage of this. Recently, news about data leaks related to banks, insurance and credit cards have come to light on several occasions in the country. This has shaken people’s confidence in data security.

Companies will have to take care of the user

As provided in the Data Protection Bill, now if a user deletes their social media account, companies will also have to delete their data. The company may retain user data solely to fulfill its business purposes. Users will have the right to rectify or delete their personal data.

With children’s rights in mind, the new bill will prohibit any company or institution from collecting data that harms children. Children’s data will not be tracked for targeted advertising. Parental permission will be mandatory to access children’s data. Adequate provisions to maintain national security and public order have also been included in the bill.
