Dead body of baby dolphin found on the banks of river Ganges
Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh is the confluence of the Ganga and Gomti rivers. Here in Khanpur, fishermen found a dead baby dolphin floating on the river bank. The fishermen immediately pulled him out of the river. The forest department was also informed about this, but by the time the officials arrived, the fishermen had floated the body of the baby dolphin in the Ganga. A video of this has also surfaced.
Near Patna village of Khanpur Police Station is the Ganga Ghat, around which a large number of dolphins are seen. Dolphins love the calm environment here. Efforts are on to make this place a Dolphin Conservation Centre. For this, the team of the forest department has also visited the Aquatic Forest Conservation Committee of Dehradun several times.
Information was given to the forest department officials
Friends of Ganga informed the forest department officials about the discovery of the dead body of the baby dolphin. But by the time local officials reached the spot several hours later, Gangamitra had released the baby dolphin into the Ganga. Ganga’s friends say that if the dolphin had been post-mortem, the cause of its death would have been known. It is suspected that the baby dolphin may have died due to an illness.
As said by the officials of the forest department
Fishermen say that dolphin carcasses have been destroyed by dogs and animals before. There is anger among animal lovers over the non-construction of a dolphin conservation center and non-postmortem of dead dolphins. When spoken to, Vivek Kumar, officer-in-charge of the forest department, said that he had received information about the matter. He immediately dispatched local officials to the spot who arrived around 9:00 pm. By then the dead dolphin was thrown into the Ganga by Ganga Mitra and local fishermen.
About a year-and-a-half ago, officials had talked about setting up a dolphin center in the Ganga river near Patna village, after a thorough inspection of the river Ganga from Aurihar’s Kharouna to Varahdham. Varanasi Forest Conservation Officer Dr. Ravi Kumar and Divisional Director Kumari Swati along with half a dozen Ganga Guards traveled by sea from the confluence of Ganga Gomti to Aurihar covering a total distance of 10 km in the river Ganga and inspected the same area. Gazipur Divisional Director Vivek Yadav said that this place is included in the flood affected area due to which there will be problem in building a dolphin center here.
