IC-814 The Kandahar Hijack
Anubhav Sinha-directed web series IC-814 The Kandahar Hijack and its OTT platform Netflix’s woes show no sign of abating. First there was a ruckus on the charge of hurting Hindu sentiments. Now news agency ANI has approached the Delhi High Court in a copyright and trademark infringement case against Netflix and the makers of the series. The agency accused the series of using its footage without a license. On a petition by ANI, the Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Netflix and the producers of the show.
According to a Bar & Bench report, the news agency has alleged in the petition that Netflix and the show’s makers have violated copyrights and trademarks. It is being said that the show has used pictures of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, General Pervez Musharraf and terrorist Masood Azhar without licence. A Reuters report said the news agency has asked the makers to remove four episodes of the series as ANI’s content has been used without licence.
Answer will have to be given within two days
Justice Mini Pushkarna heard the case on Monday. The court has ordered the show’s production house Matchbox Shots, Banaras Mediaworks and Netflix to file their reply within two days for interim relief. The court will now hear the matter on Friday.

The agency’s lawyer Siddhant Kumar told the court that the producer of the show approached ANI in the year 2021 and appealed to use the footage. However, no agreement was reached between the two parties at that time. He also said that ANI’s logo was also visible in one of the footages, which was a violation of the use of the trade mark. The lawyer said that the show is not only controversial but also anti-national in the eyes of the public. We don’t want to be associated with it.
First there was an uproar over the name
This web series starring Vijay Verma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, got into controversy as soon as it was released. The names of the two kidnappers were alleged to be Bhola and Shankar. Later, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting also summoned the Vice President of Netflix in this matter. After meeting with the government, Netflix decided to add a disclaimer with everyone’s real name in the series.
