Taxpayers can easily file their tax returns from home.

Most salaried taxpayers pay their taxes in the month of July. There is a reason for this too. Most companies give Form 16 to their employees in the last week of June or the first week of July. To file tax returns, taxpayers require Form 16 along with other important documents like Form 26AS, Annual Information Return (AIS), Tax Information Return (TIS), bank details and trust certificate.

Once you have organized these documents and are ready to file your tax return, the next thing you need to do is find the right ITR form for which you are eligible. The Income Tax Department has notified 7 forms – ITR-1 to ITR-7 for filing tax returns for the financial year 2023-24.

By filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) form, taxpayers declare their income, investments, tax deductions and exemptions, and taxes. According to the Income Tax Act, 1961, if a person’s income exceeds the basic exemption limit, the person has to pay income tax.

Filing a tax return helps the taxpayer carry forward losses to the next financial years and claim tax refunds. E-filing is the process of filing your tax return and completing all the tasks digitally. To file tax returns electronically, taxpayers can log in to the new income tax portal through their PAN. This is how to file your income tax return

  1. step 1 : Log in and click on ‘Login’ to go to the official Income Tax e-filing website. Enter your PAN in the User ID section. Click on ‘Continue’ and enter your password. Click on ‘Continue’ to log in.
  2. Step 2: Go to ‘File Income Tax Return’. Click on the ‘e-File’ tab > ‘Income Tax Return’ > ‘File Income Tax Return’.
  3. Step 3: Select the correct ‘Assessment Year’. If you are filing for the financial year 2023-24, select ‘Assessment Year’ as ‘Assessment Year 2024-25’. Use ‘Online’ as the filing mode. Select the filing type as Original Return or Revised Return.
  4. Stage 4: Select State and select your filing status. Individual, HUF or Others. After that, click on ‘Continue’.
  5. Step 5: Select the type of ITR and then decide which ITR form you need based on your source of income. There are 7 ITR forms, out of which ITR 1 to 4 are for individuals and HUFs.
  6. Step 6: Please state the reason you are filing your return. It includes taxable income that exceeds the exemption limit and meets specific criteria.
  7. Step 7: Check the pre-filled details like PAN, Aadhaar, name, contact details and bank details. Check your income, exemptions and deduction details.
  8. Step 8: The final phase is to verify your return within the time limit (30 days). You can do the e-verification using methods like Aadhaar OTP, EVC, Net Banking or by sending a physical copy of ITR-V to CPC, Bengaluru.
