A junior doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. Protests have been ongoing there ever since. Junior doctors are still protesting against the removal of the Kolkata Police Commissioner. They demand that the police commissioner should resign.

The doctors alleged that the evidence was tampered with in the presence of the police before the CBI probe. The doctors say their protest will continue until the police commissioner resigns. When BJP MP Abhijit Ganguly arrived at the protest site this morning, students raised slogans against him.

What is the demand for doctors?

The junior doctor alleged that the preliminary investigation by the police was negligent which led to tampering with the evidence. A lot of evidence was destroyed due to the crowd around the body and why the police lied to the family that their daughter had committed suicide. Even when the mob attacked the protesting doctors, the police allegedly did nothing. The doctor wants clarification on all these matters and the resignation of the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

What has been developed so far?

Today, a new law called the Aparajita Mahila and Children (West Bengal Criminal Law and Amendment) Bill 2024 has been introduced in the Bengal Assembly regarding the Mamata Banerjee rape, which provides for the death penalty for the perpetrators.

On Monday, the CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, in a case of financial irregularities. Former Deputy Superintendent Dr.Akhtar Ali complained against him.

Protests have been going on ever since the incident took place on August 9. Initially being investigated by the Kolkata Police, the case was later transferred to the CBI. Now only CBI is investigating it.

There is a lot of politics going on in this matter. The BJP is alleging that Mamata Banerjee did not take the case seriously, while Mamata is alleging that the BJP is playing politics and spreading chaos in Bengal on this pretext.
