RD Burman is named among artists who have made a distinct identity in everything from Indian to Western music. Born in Kolkata, RD Burman’s father Sachin Dev Burman also has a deep connection with music. RD Burman’s mother was also a lyricist. It may surprise you to know that RD Burman composed his first song at the age of just 9 years. There is an interesting story behind this.

There are two stories behind RD Burman’s name ‘Pancham’. It is said that when RD Burman was young, actor Ashok Kumar once visited his house. Seeing Ashok Kumar he was repeating the five notes of music i.e. the fifth note of sa.re.ga.ma.pa i.e. ‘pa pa’. After which Ashok Kumar named it ‘Pancham’.

What is the second story?

Another story behind the name ‘Pancham’ is that when RD Burman cried as a child, the sound reminded his parents of that ‘pa’ tune. Due to which he was nicknamed ‘Pancham’. It is also said about RD Burman that he was only 9 years old when he wrote his first song ‘E Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa’.

This song was used by his father Sachin Dev Burman in ‘Fantush’. This film came in the year 1956. The year 1972 was a very good year for Pancham Da. Many of his songs proved to be superhits that year. He sang songs in films like ‘Bombay to Goa’, ‘Parichaya’, ‘Sita Aur Geeta’, ‘Mere Jeevan Sathi’ and ‘Jawani Deewani’. In the year 1975, his song ‘Mehbooba-Mehbooba’ was released, which was loved by the people. This song is from Amitabh Bachchan’s movie ‘Sholay’.
