Imtiaz did his high school studies in Patna, but then moved to Jamshedpur for his studies. He lived there with his aunt. There was a cinema hall next to her aunt’s house. He befriended a boy who worked as a projectionist in that hall. In this way he used to watch movies there for free.

When he came to Delhi for further studies, he took admission in Hindu College of Delhi University. Meanwhile he was also preparing for civil services. But in the meantime he got interested in drama. He joined the drama society of Hindu College. After completing his studies from Delhi, he moved to Mumbai and from there he did a course in film production. During the same time, he also took a course in advertising and marketing to become a copywriter.

Got a job for 1500 rupees per month

Meanwhile, Kunal Kohli hired him as Glorify Tape Boy in Zee TV for Rs. Retained on a monthly salary of 1500. After that he also worked at Crest Communications. Imtiaz’s entry into the world of direction came when he learned that Sunny Deol was looking for a story to launch his cousin Abhay Deol. Imtiaz wrote a script. He approached Sunny Deol. Sunny agreed and Abhay’s first film ‘Socha Na Tha’ was released on a story written by Imtiaz. The film was directed by Imtiaz.
