People are troubled by rains in Himachal and Uttarakhand. Mountains are collapsing in many places. Roads are closed. Many districts had to declare a holiday in schools. But the impact of heavy rains in these two hilly states may also reach the people of Delhi in the form of crisis. An alert has been issued regarding rising water level of Yamuna River in Delhi. Meanwhile, heavy rains in the hilly areas have also raised the tension among the people of the capital. Due to this rain, the water level of Yamuna may rise and there is a risk of flooding in Delhi.

If this happens, the houses built on the banks of the Yamuna in Delhi may get flooded. This means thousands of homes could be submerged. The Meteorological Department in Delhi has warned about rising water level of Yamuna. The reason for this is said to be water coming from the mountains due to heavy rains in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, due to which the water level in the Yamuna is feared to rise.

Where does water come from?

The water level has risen as it reaches the Dak Pathar barrage in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun. This water comes from areas of the hill state and reaches the Hathini Kund barrage in Haryana. After the water rises in this barrage, it is released into the river Yamuna towards Delhi. This time too due to heavy rains water level has risen in Uttarakhand and Haryana. If a large amount of water is released from here, there may be floods in Delhi.

In view of this crisis and the level of the Yamuna in Delhi, the Supreme Committee of the Delhi Government interacted with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Flood Control Team. In this meeting, views were taken on the preparedness to face the crisis. All departments concerned with this are monitoring the water level of Yamuna.
