Heavy rains in Nepal cause rivers to overflow in Bihar, high alert for floods, official holidays cancelled.

The water resources department in Bihar is on alert mode over the unexpected amount of water flowing into major rivers in the next 48 hours. The leave of all officers of the department has been canceled till further orders. The Water Resources Department informed on Friday that the neighboring country Nepal has been receiving heavy rains since September 27, due to which there is a possibility of unexpected water flow in the Gandak, Koshi, Mahananda etc. rivers originating from Nepal. 48 hours.

According to the forecast released by the Water Resources Department’s Flood Management Improvement Support Centre, Patna, 6.00 lakh cusecs of water was released from the Gandak barrage at Valmikinagar during the midnight of September 27-28 and 6.81 lakh cusecs from the Koshi barrage at Virpur at 12:00 hours. On September 28, the water flow is likely to be close to the maximum water flow ever recorded.

Meeting of Water Resources Department

In view of this possible situation, a high-level meeting was held at the departmental level under the chairmanship of the Principal Secretary, Water Resources Department. Engineer-in-Chief, Flood Control, Water Drainage and Engineer-in-Chief, Headquarters and other senior officers were present in it. During the high-level meeting, the preparations were reviewed and necessary decisions were taken considering the gravity of the situation.

Instructions for camping in vulnerable places

The department has instructed all regional engineers to camp for the next 48 hours at sensitive and vulnerable locations with a view to protecting embankments and structures. Sufficient flood protection materials have been stocked at all locations. Besides, additional engineers have also been deputed as per requirement for better monitoring of sensitive and highly sensitive locations. Leave of all officers under the department has been canceled till further orders.

Safety monitoring of embankments

Keeping in view the potential disaster situation, the concerned district administration has also been directed to take all necessary precautionary measures, inform the people living in the embankment area and ensure patrolling from the district administrative level for flood disaster. All embankments are being monitored and maintained for safety.
