Sheikh Abdul Rashid popularly known as Engineer Rashid has defeated the former Chief Minister from the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Engineer Rashid contested the election from jail and won. He was arrested in the 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case. He applied for interim bail in the court to take oath as an MP. A Delhi court on Saturday asked the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to respond by July 1 to the plea filed by engineer Rashid. The hearing of this case will now take place on July 1. During today’s hearing, the court refused to grant him parole or bail.

Additional Sessions Judge Kiran Gupta fixed the case for hearing on July 1 and directed the NIA to file its reply by then. Let us tell you that on June 24, 25 and 26, the newly elected MPs of the Lok Sabha will be sworn in in Parliament. Engineer Rashid has applied for bail to take the oath of membership.

The judge made the remarks in response to arguments by Rashid’s lawyer, who told the court that Sanjay Singh was recently paroled from custody to take oath as a Rajya Sabha MP. The judge accepted the NIA’s request to file a reply.

While arguing for Rashid’s release on bail, Advocate Oberoi said that he had won the election with a huge majority. He wants them to fight democratically.

He is in jail in a terror funding case

He said that taking the oath was his constitutional duty. It is really a shame that he had to appeal to the court to swear. The court may direct the jail authorities to contact the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the NIA to contact the Lok Sabha Secretariat or the Lok Sabha Secretariat to mention the date of Rashid’s swearing-in.

Engineer Rashid Tihar has been lodged in jail by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case. The NIA had filed a chargesheet in the case against Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.
