In Gonda district, the water level of river Ghaghra has once again reached 32 cm above the danger mark. Like every year this time too two talukas of Ghaghra district are wreaking havoc in the areas of Karnalganj and Tarabganj. Due to rising water level of Ghaghra, water income in rural areas is continuously increasing. The flow of water is so fast that the road connecting Nawabganj to Ayodhya with Ghemwaghat has been broken, affecting thousands of people. Boats are the only means of access for the people of this area to reach higher places.
Flood waters entered 20 villages
Around 20 villages including Dattanagar, Sakhipur, Gokula, Tulsipur Beuda, Bahadurpur in Nawabganj area of the district have been inundated with flood water. In agriculture and such conditions, after hard work, when the crops are ready, the flood waters damage the crops. The district administration is not giving any relief here. Villagers are very disturbed due to flood water.
Millions of cusecs of water are being released from the barrage
The area is prone to floods due to the rains on the mountains and the continuous release of water from Nepal. Dozens of villages in Tarbganj and Karnalganj taluka areas of Gonda district are at risk of flooding due to the release of nearly 4 lakh cusecs of water from Sarada, Girija and Saryu barrages. River foothills have been inundated and people have been forced to migrate. As the river Ghaghra became raging, people left the river bed and started building their houses on higher places, while due to the fear of erosion, people are demolishing their houses themselves.
An appeal for help from the district administration
The flood victims are now appealing to the district administration for help. In fact this time due to continuous rain in early July, the water level of Ghaghra has increased. Villages, roads, schools and banks of river Ghaghra in Gonda district have all been submerged due to the release of lakhs of cusecs of water. Link roads have been cut in many villages and schools and roads have been cut in many areas and people are facing great hardship. The district administration is constantly talking about relief and rescue work but the ground reality is different. People in flood affected areas are distressed and are facing problems of food and shelter for themselves as well as their livestock. About 20 percent of the population and about 11,000 cattle have been affected in the flooded area.
