Anil Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan

It has been almost 23 years since Anil Kapoor’s political drama Nayak was released. Many people will be surprised to know that Nayak could not do anything special in theatres. However, the film was a hit on TV, earning it cult classic status. Apart from this, another thing that you might not know is that Anil Kapoor was not the first choice for this film, rather the makers wanted to cast Shahrukh Khan in it.

In an interview to Rediff, Shah Rukh Khan himself said that he had signed Nayak to be directed by Shankar. However, due to some reasons he could not do this film. Shah Rukh took only Rs 1 from Shankar to sign the film and was also ready to give wholesale dates.

Shahrukh took the signing amount

He said, “Why did he (Shankar) say that I have signed this film and also taken the sign amount? Do you know how much? One rupee. I took one rupee from him. And told her that whenever she wants dates, I will give them in bulk (long dates together).”

It was a Hindi remake of Nair Shankar’s Tamil film Madhulvan. Shah Rukh had said that he loved the original Tamil film. He also told the reason behind when he left the film. He said, “I was not comfortable doing the Hindi version. I told Shankar that in Tamil, being Chief Minister all day has worked brilliantly, but I don’t think it is such a big issue in North India.

Shahrukh felt that this concept would not work here. That’s why he refused to work in this film. However, he said, “I still have his signing amount. My promise about dates still stands. He is someone I would definitely love to work with. To me he is like James Cameron.
