Elections of a total of 8305 cooperative societies in Maharashtra have been postponed.

Elections to cooperative societies in the state have been postponed. Elections to co-operative societies have been postponed due to heavy monsoon. Elections of as many as 8305 cooperative societies have been postponed. The election process of cooperative societies in the state is conducted by the State Cooperative Election Authority as per Section 73CB of the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act, 1960. According to a June 12 letter from the office of the State Co-operative Election Authority, information about pending elections of 24,710 cooperative societies in the state for 2024-25 or the next year has come to light. The election process of 8305 cooperative societies has started. But due to rain, the government has decided to postpone the elections of all cooperative societies till 30 September 2024. Keeping in view the rains and the farmers, the state government has issued an order in this regard.

What does the government say in the order?

The Meteorological Department has predicted normal rainfall in 2024. According to the information received from the Relief and Rehabilitation Department, 14 districts of the state have received more than 100 percent of the average rainfall of last year and 5 districts have received more than 70 percent of the average rainfall. Therefore, most of the farmers in the district are engaged in threshing, peak planting and other allied agricultural activities during the Kharif season. Cooperatives having such farmer members are likely to face difficulty in participating in the election process. In view of this, the government is of the view that it would be appropriate to postpone the election process of cooperatives in the state till the end of rainy season (September 30, 2024), otherwise the state government has stated in the order. .

According to Section 73AA of the Maharashtra Co-operative Societies Act, 1960, the administration has the right to postpone the elections of co-operative societies due to monsoon disruption. That is, as per the President’s order mentioned in the above paragraph, taking into account the current rainfall situation in many districts of the state, the elections of the Co-operative Housing Societies in the state have been ordered and the orders of the Supreme/High Court have been given. After the completion of such co-operatives and removal process, only the President/Vice-President of the organization remains to be elected, except such co-operatives, other co-operatives are currently at the stage of election or order, that stage is postponed till 30th September 2024, otherwise the State The government has declared.
