There was a sharp decline in retail inflation in the month of August. The effect of this is also visible in the prices of veg and non-veg thali. On a year-on-year and month-on-month basis, there has been a decline in both types of thalis in the month of August. According to Crisil MI & Research report, the price of homemade veg thali has declined by 8 per cent and the price of homemade non-veg thali has seen a decline of 12 per cent year-on-year.
Effect of tomato prices
According to the report, the reduction in veg thali cost was due to a 51 per cent drop in tomato prices as tomatoes accounted for 14 per cent of the veg thali cost in India in August 2024. The report said that due to fresh supply from southern and western states of the country, tomato prices fell to Rs 50 per kg in August 2024, while in August 2023, tomato prices were Rs 102 per kg.
Prices of cylinders and spices remained low
According to the report, a 27 per cent drop in LPG prices also contributed to the fall in thali prices. The report said that in March 2024, the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi was Rs 803, while in August 2023, its price was Rs 1,103. In August 2024, thali prices also saw a decline as prices of vegetable oil, chilli and cumin, which constitute around 5 per cent of the cost of a vegetarian thali, rose by 6 per cent, 30 per cent and 58 per cent respectively. On a year-on-year basis, there has been a drop of up to 100 per cent.

Reduction in the price of broiler chicken
The report has said that the main reason for the fall in non-veg thali prices is the 13 per cent fall in broiler prices in the country compared to the previous year, which accounts for 50 per cent of the cost of thali. Due to the rise in onion and potato prices, the fall in thali prices was halted. Onion prices have seen an increase of Rs 15 per kg, while potato prices have seen an increase of Rs 13. According to the report, this is due to lower crop arrival than the Rabi crop.
How much is the monthly decrease?
According to the report, the price of vegetable thali declined by 4 per cent on a monthly basis, while the price of non-veg thali witnessed a 3 per cent fall in the same period. According to the agency’s report, there was a 27 per cent month-on-month decline in tomato prices in August 2024, which stood at Rs 50 per kg compared to Rs 66 per kg in July 2024.
According to the report, the main reason for the fall in non-veg thali prices has been the decline in meat consumption due to the month of Shravan in August. During this period, a 1-3 per cent decline has been observed in broiler chicken prices. According to the report, balancing the prices, potato prices increased by 2 per cent and onion prices increased by 3 per cent, slightly slowing down the sharp fall in thali prices.
