The brutality of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Medical College has raised questions about the safety of doctors, especially women doctors. In this regard, FAIMS (Faculty Association of All India Institute of Medical Sciences) has demanded the implementation of Central Security Act.

FAIMS General Secretary Dr. Amarinder Singh Malhi said that the protest against what happened to the woman doctor in Kolkata will continue until a law is brought in this regard. FAIMS has demanded the Union Health Ministry to intervene in the matter and speak to the Chief Minister of West Bengal to speed up the investigation.

What happened to the deceased?

Dr. Amarinder Singh Malhi said that the deceased student was working in the medical college for the last 36 hours. She was a dedicated promising young doctor. It is sad that they were forced to use the seminar room for rest due to lack of proper rest facilities. Whatever happened to him there, ended his life.

What does the Central Protection Act say?

Amarinder Singh said that we demand immediate implementation of the long pending legal framework in the form of Central Security Act for health workers across the country. After the implementation of this Act, the responsibility of those in charge of security work will be fixed, especially those working at higher levels. Also, for security reasons, CCTV cameras will be installed everywhere in medical colleges and hospitals. Security infrastructure should be made mandatory.

Amarinder said that the unfortunate thing is that this is not an isolated incident. We also remember another tragic incident from some time ago. A young resident female doctor was stabbed to death in the casualty ward of a taluk hospital in Kerala.

Amarinder Singh Malhi said that this incident has raised questions about the environment we are providing to general health workers, especially women. Lack of proper on-call facilities and absence of adequate safety measures in patient care areas have exacerbated the situation.
