Atishi, Minister in Delhi Govt

The Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi will oppose the decision to impose GST on research grants. Delhi Government Minister Atishi gave this information on Sunday. He said that no country in the world levies tax on research grants. Apart from this, it will oppose GST on payment gateway transactions below Rs 2,000. The minister said that imposition of GST on small transactions through payment gateways will hurt startups.

He further said that BJP itself is reducing money on research. A government research grant of Rs. 70000 crores reduced to Rs. 30000 crore has been done. On the other hand, educational institutions themselves are generating research grants, now the BJP is talking about imposing GST on them too. We oppose it. Tomorrow the Delhi government will raise this issue and demand GST exemption on research grants for all educational institutions.

Atishi’s claim – Notices have been sent to several educational institutions

Minister Atishi said that in August 2024, the central government had issued show-cause notices to many educational institutions in the country for non-payment of GST. The central government is seeking to impose GST on research grants received from 2017 to 2024 by all universities, including Punjab University and IIT Delhi. No country in the world taxes research grants.

The Delhi government called it tax terrorism

He said that the level of higher education in any country depends on how much and what kind of research is done in the university there. Governments around the world provide grants to encourage research in academic institutions. New schemes are introduced, but in our country the central government of BJP wants to discourage research work by imposing tax on grants to educational institutions. This type of tax terrorism should be stopped immediately.

Attacking the central government, Atishi said that on one hand, the Modi government talks about promoting digital transactions and cashless economy. On the other hand, the government levied 18 percent GST on transactions above Rs 2000. Now the government is proposing to impose GST on payment gateways for online transactions.

54th meeting of GST Council tomorrow

The 54th meeting of GST Council will be held tomorrow i.e. September 9. Tax on research grants, payment gateway transactions and many other issues will be discussed in this meeting. It is believed that in this meeting, the governments of the opposition parties will raise their voices on the decision to impose GST on health insurance premiums. After this meeting, it will be clear whether there will be GST exemption on health insurance premium in the country or not.
