The government has recently taken many important decisions regarding the agriculture sector and increasing the income of farmers. In which the customs duty on crude palm oil and refined sunflower oil should be increased to 20 percent and 32.5 percent respectively or the MEP on onion should be reduced. After these decisions, everyone from the Prime Minister of the country to the Agriculture Minister are giving statements from their respective levels. The government believes that these decisions will benefit the farmers “a lot” as it will increase their income. Moreover, employment opportunities will also be created in rural areas. The Prime Minister of the country said that we are sparing no effort for the benefit of our farmer brothers and sisters who are working day and night for the food security of the country. On the other hand, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said in his X that the government is working with commitment for the all-round development and welfare of farmers.

What did PM Modi and Shivraj Singh post?

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is working with commitment for the all-round development and welfare of farmers. To increase the income of farmers and expand the agriculture sector, the central government is taking many such decisions, which not only enrich the farmer brothers and sisters but also give a fresh impetus to the country’s economy. Before that, the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had issued in his X that we will spare no effort for the benefit of our farmer brothers and sisters who are working day and night for the food security of the country. Be it reducing export duty on onion or increasing import duty on edible oils, many of these decisions will greatly benefit our farmers. While this will increase their income, it will also increase employment opportunities in rural areas.

Such decisions were taken

According to the Ministry of Finance’s notification, the basic customs duty on crude palm, soybean and sunflower oil has been increased from zero to 20 percent. The basic customs duty on refined palm, soybean and sunflower oil has been increased from 12.5 percent to 32.5 percent. The effective tariff on these crude and refined oils will be increased from 5.5 percent to 27.5 percent and from 13.75 percent to 35.75 percent respectively.

Domestic prices can be controlled

The ministry said that this is a boon for soybean and oilseed farmers. Farmers in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will benefit greatly from this as the production of these oilseeds is very high there. According to the ministry, these measures have been possible due to the effective management of the government so that the domestic prices of edible oil, which have been falling continuously for the last two years, can be controlled. These are very wise measures taken by the government to support soybean farmers without affecting the market sentiment. Apart from Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, other major oilseed producing states are Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

A big decision is made about the onion

Earlier, the government had fixed $550 per tonne as the minimum export price (MEP), which essentially meant that farmers could not sell their produce abroad below this rate. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) notification issued on Friday removed the MEP with immediate effect. The government has reduced the duty on export of onions from 40 per cent to 20 per cent. No export duty is levied on Bangalore pink onion.

Last week, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said that the outlook for onion availability and prices in the coming months remains positive as the area sown to Kharif (summer) onion has rapidly increased to 2.9 lakh hectares in August, while in the same month, this area was 1.94 lakh hectares a year ago. She said that farmers and traders still have around 38 lakh tonnes of onion in stock.

Piyush Goyal had given information

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that by removing the MEP and reducing export duty from 40 to 20 per cent, onion can be exported in larger quantities. He said on social media platform X that this decision will increase the income of farmers and exporters and give a big boost to business in the agriculture sector. Regarding the removal of MEP on Basmati rice, the Minister said that this will help increase exports and income of farmers.
