Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chief cleric of Kashmir’s Jama Masjid and president of the Hurriyat Conference, has alleged that he has been put under house arrest again. He was not allowed to pray at Jama Masjid on Friday.
Mirwaiz Farooq alleged that he was not allowed to leave the house for Friday prayers. The police parked their vehicle in front of their house and blocked the road. No clear answer was given when the reason was asked, it seems that their freedom is in the hands of the police administration, to do what they want.
He said that recently the court had ordered his release, but now the same situation has resumed. He has been exempted from house arrest since September 2023, since then it often happens that the police does not allow him to leave the house without giving any valid reason.
Detention may extend till election
The separatist leader alleged that he suspected that he would be kept under house arrest till the completion of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. The Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections are to be held in 3 phases from September 18 to October 1. The result will come on 8th October. This is the first election in 2019 after the abrogation of Article 370 and the formation of Union Territories.
Even before this, when Article 370 was removed from Jammu and Kashmir, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was kept under house arrest for a long time. He was released after a court order in September last year.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is one of the 14 Mirwaiz of Kashmir. Mirwaiz is a religious post in Kashmir. He is also the Chief Maulvi of Jama Masjid in Kashmir and has been the President of All Hurriyat Conference.
