The Congress is preparing to take action against MLAs who cross-voted in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. The state in-charge spoke to the local leadership and took a report, which has been handed over to the organization’s general secretary KC Venugopal. According to sources, the cross-voting MLAs include Jitesh Antapurkar, Mohan Humbarde, Sulbha Khodke, Jeeshan Siddiqui and Hiraman Khoshkar.
Voting for the Legislative Council elections in the state was held on July 12. A total of 12 candidates were in the fray in the elections held on 11 seats of the Legislative Council. Of these, 9 candidates from the BJP-led coalition won, while 1 from the Shiv Sena (UBT) and 1 from the Congress won. Jayant Patil of Sharad group lost the election due to cross voting of Congress MLAs.
Who had how many candidates?
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded five candidates, while its Mahayuti ally Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) fielded two candidates each. Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) fielded one candidate each, while their Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) ally NCP (Sharad Chandra Pawar) was supporting the Farmers and Workers Party (PWP) candidate.
The winning BJP candidates include Pankaja Munde, Parinay Phuke, Amit Gorkhe, Yogesh Tillekar and Sada Bhau Khot. While Shivaji Rao Garje and Rajesh Whitaker of NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) won. Kirpal Tumane and Bhavna Gawli of Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) managed to register victory. Milind Narvekar of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Pragya Satav from Congress won.
The tenure ends on July 27
The six-year tenure of the 11-member Legislative Council (MLC) ends on July 27. The state’s 288-member assembly is the electoral college for these elections and currently stands at 274. BJP is the largest party in the assembly with 103 members. After that, Shiv Sena has 38, NCP 42, Congress 37, Shiv Sena (UBT) 15 and NCP (Sharad Chandra Pawar) 10.
Other parties represented in the lower house include Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (three), Samajwadi Party (two), AIMIM (two), Prahar Janashakti Party (two) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (one), Marxist Communist Party (one), Swabhimani Party (one).
