Now the eyes of the whole world are on India when it comes to semiconductor chips. On this front, all the countries of the world are working on the China Plus One policy. In such a situation, India has worked to increase its strength to end China’s dominance over semiconductors. On this, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (IT) S Krishnan said on Sunday that due to the current geopolitical situation, like-minded countries are collaborating with India to make it a major semiconductor manufacturing destination.
Micron and Tata started working
Krishnan said that pilot facilities of US storage semiconductor maker Micron and Tata Electronics have already produced chips, and their flagship plants in Gujarat will start producing chips made in India from the second quarter of 2025. Krishnan said that globally, and due to geopolitical circumstances, there is a growing awareness that semiconductors are a very important and strategic commodity and hence we need adequate strength in semiconductor production.
Had to suffer losses due to Covid
He said the importance of semiconductor strength was underlined during the Covid pandemic, when many industries (the automotive industry, the medical device industry and other electronics and consumer electronics industries) suffered losses because they did not have access to chips, which led to the belief that there should be greater diversification, especially in semiconductor sourcing.

These countries are receiving support
He said that many like-minded countries are working together with India to make India the next major destination where semiconductor manufacturing can actually take place. This is basically aimed at creating strength in the global semiconductor price chain. We also have agreements with the US, the European Union, Britain, Japan and now Singapore.
