Budget 2024: Budget may be presented these days, Nirmala Sitharaman will break a big record

In the next three weeks, the country’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be able to present the pre-budget of the new NDA government. In the press report, citing sources, it is stated that the Finance Minister could present the budget for the financial year 2025 on July 23 or 24. However, there has been no official statement yet regarding the date of presentation of the annual budget. Now that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has secured its third term at the Center after the general elections, all eyes are now on the upcoming Union Budget.

The budget will be presented at the beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament. According to sources, the monsoon session is likely to begin on July 22 and continue till August 9. Meanwhile, the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, which began on June 24, will continue till July 4 and will end sine die. Nirmala Sitharaman officially took over as Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs on June 12. Since then, she started preparing the budget.

Pre-budget meeting started on June 19

On June 19, the Finance Minister chaired the first pre-Budget consultation with leading economists on the upcoming General Budget 2024-25. A day later, Nirmala Sitharaman held a second pre-budget consultation meeting with leading experts from the financial and capital markets sector. Finance Minister Sitharaman held the third pre-budget consultation meeting with industry leaders and associations. After the meeting, PHDCCI suggested the ministry to promote the manufacturing sector, support consumer demand and provide relief to middle-income groups by rationalizing tax slabs.

Continuous meeting from June 21 to June 24

On June 21, Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the fourth pre-budget consultation meeting with representatives of farmer unions and agricultural economists. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, Finance Secretary TV Somanathan, Chief Economic Advisor V Ananth Nageswaran, Secretary Department of Economic Affairs and senior officials of the Ministry of Agriculture were present in the meeting. On June 22 she held pre-budget consultations with finance ministers of states and union territories. The objective of the meeting was to compile recommendations for the upcoming Union Budget 2024-25. Later, on June 24, she chaired the sixth pre-budget consultation with unions and labor organizations. The meeting was also attended by Secretaries of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Labor and Employment and Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India.

Earlier, ahead of the general elections on February 1, 2024, Nirmala Sitharaman had presented the interim budget for 2024-2025. With the presentation of the Union Budget for 2024-25 next month, External Affairs Minister Sitharaman will create a new record and become the first Finance Minister in the country’s history to present seven consecutive budgets. Currently, he equals the record of former Finance Minister Morarji Desai, who presented six consecutive budgets. Once she presents Budget 2024 in Parliament, she will leave behind Morarji Desai’s record and become the first Finance Minister to present 7 consecutive budgets. Nirmala Sitharaman has been a Union minister in all three Modi cabinets of 2014, 2019 and 2024.
