The BJP on Monday announced the name of its candidate for the by-election to be held in the single seat of the Legislative Council of Uttar Pradesh. The BJP has fielded former MLA Bahoranlal Mauryan as its Legislative Council candidate, who will file his candidature on Tuesday. This seat fell vacant due to the resignation of Swami Prasad Maurya. Considering the number of MLAs in the assembly, the SP has not fielded its candidate, making it certain that Bahoranlal Maurya will win unopposed.

BJP has fielded its candidate Maurya on SP’s Maurya’s MLC seat. BJP made Bahoran Maurya its candidate on the seat left vacant after Swami Prasad Maurya resigned as MLC. This time in the Lok Sabha elections, a large section of the Kushwaha, Maurya, Kurmi and Kashyap communities went with the SP. Because of this, the BJP has suffered a major political setback in Uttar Pradesh. BJP has reduced from 62 seats to 33 and lost 29 Lok Sabha seats. It is believed that in order to win back the confidence of OBC votes in the 2024 elections, the BJP decided to make Baharanlal Maurya, who hails from the Mauryan community, as MLC.

Bahoran Lal Maurya, old leader of BJP

Bahoran Lal Maurya is an old BJP leader. Has been MLA twice from Bhojipura assembly seat in Bareilly. Bahoran Lal Maurya became MLA for the first time in 1996 and for the second time in 2017 from Bhojipura. He has been the Minister of State for Revenue in 1997. In the year 2022, BJP made him a candidate again but he lost the election. SP’s Shahjeel Islam defeated him. In such a situation, BJP has staked a bet to solve the political equations of the next election by fielding Bahoran Lal Maurya on the Legislative Council seat, which is vacant due to the resignation of Swami Prasad Maurya.

BJP’s efforts to help the backward classes

After a poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections in UP, the BJP has re-intensified its efforts to woo the backward classes to salvage its dwindling political base. Akhilesh Yadav contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on the PDA (Backward-Dalit-Minority) formula. He has succeeded in giving a crushing defeat to the BJP through the PDA formula. 10 Kurmis, 5 Mallahs, 5 Maurya-Shakyas were made candidates in the Lok Sabha elections. Out of them 7 Kurmis have been elected MPs from SP, 3 Maurya-Shakyas have been elected while 2 Nishads have become MPs.

SP has placed the most trust in the Pasi community among the Dalit community and 5 Pasi MPs have been elected from the SP. The focus was also on the Jat, Rajbhar and Lodhi communities of OBCs, in which the party was somewhat successful. However, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP worked to woo non-Yadav OBCs and non-Jatav Dalits. Due to this political equation, the BJP was able to win the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha as well as the 2017 and 2022 assembly elections in UP.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP managed to create a strong caste equation with its upper caste votebank with non-OBC castes and non-Jatav Dalits. Many castes of non-Yadav OBCs and Dalits may have stood with the BJP in the last elections due to political circumstances, but they have not become the party’s votebank. That is why their political mood changes from election to election. Even after the 2022 elections, Akhilesh Yadav understood that it would not be easy to defeat the BJP without uniting the OBC castes.

BJP’s breach of SP’s PDA formula

Akhilesh has largely succeeded in inducting all OBC castes under the PDA formula in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, including castes like Kurmi, Mallah, Jat, Rajbhar, Lodha and Maurya-Shakya-Saini-Kushwaha. Pasi, Dohre, Kori castes played an important role among Dalits. Due to which the BJP has lost 29 Lok Sabha seats in UP and its vote share has also decreased by 8 percent. Hence, the BJP has started to decide its political equations ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. It is believed that the strategy behind sending Bahoran Lal Maurya to the Legislative Council is to break the SP’s PDA formula.
