A case was registered against 28 accused.

An incident of fire in 34 houses has come to light in Bihar’s Nawada district on Wednesday. Most of these houses belonged to Scheduled Castes-Scheduled Tribes (SC-ST) communities. Two days after the incident, the state government on Friday pulled up the in-charge (SHO) of the Mofsil police station for alleged failure to gather intelligence.

In fact, a group of people set fire to 34 houses in Manjhi Tola of Mufsil Police Station area of Nawada district at around 7.15 pm on Wednesday. Police have arrested a total of 15 people including the main accused Nandu Paswan in this case. An FIR has been registered against 28 people including 15 accused arrested in this connection.

Speaking to reporters, Nawada Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhinav Dhiman said that Nilesh Kumar, SHO of Mofsil police station, has been sent to police lines for alleged failure to collect intelligence. Intelligence gathering is an important job of the police. An explanation has also been sought from the SHO regarding the incident. He has been given one week to respond. If their answer is not found satisfactory then disciplinary action will be taken against them.

The SP said that the matter is being further investigated. If other policemen are found negligent, action will be taken against them also. He further said that the situation in Nawada’s Manjhi Tola area is now under complete control.

The SP said that sufficient number of forces have been deployed there. Also, a search operation has been started to nab other absconding accused in this case. He said the police have seized three pistols, several cartridges and six motorcycles from the possession of the arrested persons.

It may be noted that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday condemned the incident and directed the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) to personally visit the spot and monitor the investigation. Nitish Kumar also emphasized the need to arrest all the suspects at the earliest. During the investigation, the police initially said that the cause of the fire was a land dispute.

The SP said that we are providing relief materials including food packets and drinking water to the displaced people. Temporary tents have been set up for the affected. The district administration has given a relief amount of Rs 1 lakh to all those families whose houses have been burnt down. After this incident, a war of words has started between the ruling NDA coalition and the opposition. A group of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders visited Manjhi Tola on Friday and met the victims.
