Who built the Mahabodhi Temple?
Emperor Ashoka adopted Buddhism. It is said that Ashoka himself built this temple. However, this temple was renovated from time to time. Inside the temple is a golden statue of Lord Buddha, which is 52 meters in length.

In 531 BC, Gautama Buddha sat by the Bodhi tree and performed austere penance. After this he attained enlightenment. That tree was Pipal. But it was called Bodhi tree. Bodhi means knowledge. That is why this tree is also called the tree of knowledge by the followers of Buddhism.
