The Joshimath-Badrinath highway was closed due to a part of the mountain collapsing.
Debris from a broken mountain on the Badrinath Highway in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath on Tuesday continues to pose a problem for pilgrims. Over 3,000 pilgrims have been stranded for the past 3 days on the highway closed due to debris. Hundreds of devotees returning from Badrinath during the Char Dham Yatra have taken refuge in the Gurdwara. The operation to remove the debris of the broken mountain is going on on a war footing.
The Joshimath-Badrinath highway has been blocked due to a large rock falling from the mountain. The work of breaking the stone went on for three days, but without any success. Now this rock has been blasted and broken. Removal of scattered debris after blasting has been started. It is expected that the road will be cleared by removing the debris by this afternoon.
An alternative route is being prepared
More than 3,000 devotees have been trapped in Joshimath since last Tuesday due to debris on the highway. The road may be open by this afternoon, as a large rock from the hillside has been blasted away. Now preparations have been started to build an alternative road here by removing the debris of the broken rock. Two machines of the Border Road Organization are busy leveling the debris and preparing an alternate route.
Pilgrims staying at the Gurdwara
Over 2,000 devotees, of whom more than 1,000 were returning from a pilgrimage to Badrinath, were stranded at the Gurdwara at Govind Ghat, the first stop of the Sikh pilgrimage Hemkund Sahib, due to the road closure. He has been stopped at Govind Ghat Gurdwara. More than 700 devotees have been detained at Joshimath Gurdwara, including 550 pilgrims returning from Hemkund and 150 pilgrims returning from Badrinath. According to Kotwal Joshimath Rakesh Chandra Bhatt, more than 500 small and big vehicles are stranded in Joshimath. The road is likely to open by 12 noon today.
Pilgrims were trapped, visions were disrupted
