National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has been reappointed as NSA. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Principal Secretary PK Mishra has also been given an extension in service. This decision was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ajit Doval will remain the National Security Advisor for the next 5 years. This is a cabinet rank post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to visit Italy soon. Ajit Doval will also accompany him. He will participate in the G-7 summit with Modi.

The notification issued by the central government said, ‘The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Ajit Doval. He has been appointed on June 10, 2024. His tenure will continue till further orders or till the appointment of the Prime Minister. Ajit Doval’s tenure has been very important during the Modi government. Ajit Doval is an IPS officer and has worked as an intelligence officer in many places.

Ajit Doval’s role is big

Ajit Doval was added as National Security Advisor in 2014 itself after Narendra Modi came to power. Ajit Doval’s imprint is visible on India’s security policy. Doval’s strategy is being used to defeat Pakistan-inspired terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Ajit Doval is also playing an important role in combating Khalistan terrorism abroad. India now has good relations with many countries. The credit for this also goes to Ajit Doval. During the Modi government, India has adopted a tough policy towards Pakistan. India carried out surgical strikes after the Uri attack. Even after the Pulwama attack, India gave a befitting reply to terrorism by carrying out air strikes in Pakistan.

What is the National Security Advisor?

The National Security Advisor is a senior official of the National Security Council (NSC) of India. He has been appointed as the NSA. His job is to formulate national security policy and act as an advisor on strategic matters. He also serves as the chief advisor to the Prime Minister of India. The National Security Advisor submits all intelligence reports to the Prime Minister. He takes decisions keeping in mind India’s internal and external threats. The National Security Advisor of India also serves as the Prime Minister’s special interlocutor with China and envoy to Pakistan and Israel on security matters. In 2019, the Government of India gave cabinet status to NSA Ajit Doval along with making him NSA.

Establishment of NSA in 1998

The NSA in India was established in 1998. All NSAs appointed since then belong to the Indian Foreign Service or the Indian Police Service. Brajesh Mishra was the first National Security Advisor during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He served in this position until 22 May 2004.

IFS officer JN Dixit was serving as NSA during the Manmohan Singh government. IPS MK Narayanan succeeded him from 3 January 2005 to 23 January 2010. After him, IFS Shiv Shankar Menon was the National Security Advisor from 24 January 2010 to 28 May 2014. After Modi became the Prime Minister in 2014, Ajit Doval was appointed to this post.
