Arunachal Pradesh’s current Chief Minister Pema Khandu will once again become the Chief Minister. He has been elected the leader of the BJP Legislative Party. He has met Governor KT Parnelak and claimed to form the government. Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister on Thursday are going on in full swing. The swearing-in ceremony will be held in the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Itanagar. In the recently held assembly elections, BJP has won 46 out of 60 seats. BJP has returned to power for the third consecutive time in Arunachal Pradesh.

In the 2019 elections, the Congress had won four seats and in the 2024 assembly elections, the Congress has won only one seat. The BJP-led NEDA constituent National People’s Party (NPP) won five seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won three and the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) won two seats.

The NPP led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, which is an ally of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), has said it will extend its support to the Pema Khandu government in Arunachal Pradesh.

BJP has won both the Lok Sabha seats in Arunachal Pradesh. Lok Sabha elections were held on 19 April along with the assembly elections in the state.

Who is Pema Khandu?

Pema Khandu was born in a distinguished political family in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. After completing his early education in Tawang, he pursued his higher education in New Delhi.

Pema Khandu’s political career began after his father Dorjee Khandu died in a helicopter crash in 2011. In 2011, he was elected to the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Mukto constituency, the seat his father was contesting from.

In 2016 Pema Khandu took oath as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. Some Congress MLAs joined the regional party People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA), thus becoming the Chief Minister under the banner of PPA. Pema Khandu and his group again joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and further strengthened his position as Chief Minister under the BJP leadership.
