A few months ago, there was news that pesticides had been found in the products of Indian spice companies and Singapore and Hong Kong had banned some Indian spice products. Then this news caused a stir throughout the country. The demand was also being raised that some standard should be fixed for articles related to agriculture, their standards should be fixed. Now the government has begun to work in this direction and the National Agricultural Code is being prepared in the country.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is responsible for setting standards for goods, products and processes in the country. The BIS is responsible for creating the ‘Hallmarking’ and ‘Star Rating’ system for everything from gold to silk to electronic products, and is now going to create the National Agricultural Code (NAC) in the country.
What work will the National Agricultural Code do?
According to agency news, the Bureau of Indian Standards is developing the National Agricultural Code (NAC) to promote quality and best practices in the agricultural sector. This will include emerging agricultural technologies, innovative agricultural activities and changing regional conditions across India. In developing this code, those areas where there is a lack of standardization will be identified. Standards will then be developed for them.

This will be similar to how the BIS previously prepared the National Building Code (NBC) for building construction and the National Electrical Code (NEC) for the power sector. All these standard codes have been appreciated by everyone from industry to common people.
What will be the benefit of the National Agricultural Code?
Regarding the benefits of the National Agricultural Code, BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari says there are currently standards in the country for agricultural machinery, tools and raw materials. NAC will work towards enabling a quality culture in Indian agriculture, as demanded by policy makers. He will also work to provide guidance to the agricultural community.
Sanjay Pant, Deputy Director General (Standardization), BIS, said NAC has immense potential to transform India’s agriculture sector by creating a more enabling environment for farmers. You will work to solve the challenges faced by farmers and promote efficient and sustainable agricultural practices. NAC can significantly improve the livelihoods of millions of people in rural India.
