A live snake was kept in a pyre along with the dead body of the youth, then both were burnt together… The villagers gave this argument.

A 22-year-old youth was bitten by a snake in Korba district of Chhattisgarh. Due to which the youth died. The villagers caught that snake. Then, in the pyre in which the dead body of the youth was kept, a snake was also kept along with the dead body. After which the pyre was set on fire. This matter has now become a topic of discussion in the entire area.

The case is from Balgamar village in Korba. Digeshwar Rathia died of snakebite here on Sunday. After the incident, the villagers burnt the snake alive with Digeshwar’s pyre. On Saturday night, when Digeshwar was making his bed in his room, he was bitten by a crate snake. Due to which Digeshwar started screaming.

The family members rushed him to Korba Medical College Hospital. But on Sunday morning, Digeshwar died during treatment. After postmortem, the body was handed over to the family for cremation. He said that after the snake bite incident, the villagers caught the snake and kept it in a basket.

Due to the death of Digeshwar, there was a lot of anger among the villagers. He tied the snake to a rope hanging from a pillar. When Digeshwar’s cremation procession was taken from his house to the cremation ground, the villagers took the snake there too. Later, the villagers burnt the snake alive on Digeshwar’s pyre. The villagers said that they were afraid that the poisonous snake might make someone else its prey, so they burnt the snake on the pyre itself.

What did the forest officer say about the incident?

Korba Sub Divisional Officer (Forest) Ashish Khelwar said that no action will be taken against the villagers for killing the snake. Khelwar said – There is a need to educate people and spread awareness about snakes and snakebites, as these reptiles are important to the ecosystem.
