According to official data released on Tuesday, domestic airlines carried 1.30 million passengers by air in September, up 6.38 percent from the same period a year earlier. In September last year, airlines had carried 1.22 million passengers. According to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), IndiGo’s market share increased to 63 per cent in September 2024, while Air India’s share increased to 15.1 per cent. AIX Connect, which merged with Air India Express this month, tops the list of airlines in terms of on-time performance (OTP) at 70.1 per cent, leaving behind Akasa Air, whose OTP fell to 62.1 per cent.

DGCA data shows that Vistara’s market share fell to 10 per cent and AIX Connect’s to 4.1 per cent last month. Air India Group’s total domestic market share, including Air India, AIX Connect and Vistara, reached 29.2 per cent. In September, 5.73 lakh and 2.61 lakh passengers flew on Akasa Air and SpiceJet respectively. While Akasa Air’s market share remained at 4.4 per cent, SpiceJet’s market share fell to 2 per cent. Crisis-hit SpiceJet saw its market fall by 64 per cent in September compared to January, when it captured 5.6 per cent of the total 1.31 million domestic air passengers carried by Indian airlines.

Meanwhile, IndiGo’s OTP stood at 69.2 per cent, followed by Vistara (69.1 per cent) and Air India (68.1 per cent). In September, the OTP of SpiceJet and Alliance Air was 30.4 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. OTPs of scheduled domestic airlines are calculated for four metropolitan airports: Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. 48,222 passengers were affected by flight cancellations and airlines spent Rs 88.14 lakh on compensation and facilities in September. According to the data, flight delays affected 2,16,484 passengers last month and airlines spent Rs 2.4 crore on the facility. The airline spent Rs 75.08 lakh on compensation and facilities for 756 affected passengers who were denied boarding.
