The Ministry of Labour announced on Thursday that following the amendment of the Variable Dearness Allowance, the minimum wages of workers in the country have now been increased. The government has raised the minimum wage to Rs 1,035 per day.

According to the statement by the Ministry of Labour, after this amendment, the minimum wage in category A areas for workers performing unskilled category work like construction, cleaning, loading and unloading of goods will be Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month). Similarly, the minimum wage for semi-skilled workers will be Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month).

While for skilled watchmen or guards, clerical workers and unarmed guards, this rate will be Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month). Apart from this, the minimum wage for advanced skilled workers and those working as armed watchmen or guards will be Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month).

The new rates will only be applicable from October 1st.

The Central Government has made it clear that the new minimum wage rates will be applicable from October 1, 2024, before the start of the festive season. The Labour Ministry says the move is aimed at helping workers tide over the rising cost of living. The minimum wage rates were last revised in April 2024. In addition to the qualification level, minimum wages are also divided into categories of geographical location. These categories are divided according to areas A, B and C.

The Labour Ministry statement said that in a major step to support workers, especially workers in the unorganised sector, the Central Government has announced an increase in the minimum wage rates by revising the Variable Dearness Allowance.
