Aam Aadmi Party leader and Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan has approached the High Court against the ED. He was arrested by the ED in a money laundering case related to alleged irregularities in appointments during his tenure as chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board. Earlier, a Delhi court had sent the MLA to 14-day judicial custody in a money laundering case.

Justice Rakesh Syal sent Amanatullah to judicial custody till September 23. The ED told the court that now there is no need to interrogate the accused in custody. He should be sent to judicial custody. The order was issued when the MLA was produced before the court after completing seven days of ED custody.

What the agency told the court

Here the investigating agency told the court that if released, the MLA can use his influence to influence the investigation of the case and the witnesses. The ED also told the court that Khan had not cooperated at all during the last interrogation.

Khan’s lawyer opposed the ED plea and requested the court to release the MLA. The judge also asked that the MLA be released, even if some conditions were attached to the release.

Due to which ED has arrested

MLA Khan was detained by the ED on September 2 under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Earlier, the ED had conducted a search at the MLA’s Okhla residence here. The agency told the court that many questions were asked to Khan during the search, but he kept evading the questions and giving vague answers. So the MLA was arrested.

What is the charge against Amanutallah?

Investigating agencies say that MLA Khan has made a lot of black money while serving as the chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board. He illegally obtained huge profits in real estate from his close associates. The ED has also alleged that Amanatullah, while the chairman, illegally leased out waqf properties worth Rs 100 crore and also appointed 32 contract employees to the waqf board. Not only this but the investigating agencies have also accused Amanatullah of misusing waqf funds.
