An engineer and doctor from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh downloaded an app from social media with the intention of earning more profit from the stock market and started investing money as per its instructions. In this situation, the doctor suffered a loss of 28 lakhs and the engineer 20 lakhs. Realizing that they have been cheated, both of them lodged a complaint at the cyber police station. The police have registered a case and started investigation in this matter.

The doctor and the engineer told the cyber police that we were looking at social media. Meanwhile an app was seen which said if you want to earn more then download this app. To get a good return, we downloaded that app. Then, when I clicked on it, a WhatsApp group opened. Apart from the admin, many people were sending screenshots in that group. Everyone was talking about huge profits and counting themselves happy. We felt greedy seeing those people but we did not stop money.

How did WhatsApp calls trap you?

A few days later the administrator called on WhatsApp. He said that if you have any fear or apprehension or the possibility of fraud, you can invest some money initially. You can make more profit with less money. We registered online. Initially we spent around Rs. 50,000 invested and the money almost doubled within a month. After that we started feeling greedy.

We spoke to the administrator and told him that we want to withhold more money. He said you will send money to that account when we tell you. You will get more profit from there. One day the administrator called WhatsApp again and said that whatever money you deposit in this account in a month, it will come back more than double in a month.

The doctor said that we had invested 28 lakh rupees as our savings and the engineer had invested 20 lakh rupees. Then, when we tried to withdraw the money after a few days, the entire account was blocked and the money was not returned. After which we started contacting the administrator but could not reach him. After this we realized that we have been cheated and approached the police.

What did the police officer say?

In this regard, CO Cantt Anshika Verma said that the doctor and the engineer lost Rs 28 and 20 lakhs to earn more profit from the stock market and then complained of fraud. Cyber police station has registered a case in this matter. The matter is being investigated. The police is trying to ensure that the money deposited in the account will be put on hold and returned if not withdrawn.
