Floods in Bihar

Due to heavy rains in Nepal, the Indian border state of Bihar has caused havoc. The rivers Gandak and Kosi flowing from Nepal through Bihar to India have wreaked havoc in more than 50 places. Many others are eager to breach embankments to enter low-lying areas. This situation has arisen due to the opening of gates of Valmiki Nagar and Birpur Barrage in Bihar.

As soon as the water comes out of this gate, more than half of the state faces the threat of floods. The water level of Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, Mahananda and other rivers passing through the state have crossed the danger mark and the situation has reached such a level that 1.41 lakh population of 13 districts of the state have been forced to migrate. According to Santosh Kumar Mall, Principal Secretary, State Water Resources Department, a total of 5.31 lakh cusecs of water was released by opening the Birpur barrage on the Kosi River on Saturday afternoon.

This much water came to Kosi after 56 years

For the first time in the last 56 years, this much water has been released into the Kosi river. He said that the embankment is in danger due to the flow of so much water at one time. Considering the situation, necessary arrangements are being made to protect the embankments. According to the Principal Secretary, earlier this much water came from this barrage in 1968. At that time, 7.88 lakh cusecs of water was released from the barrage, in the same order, 4.49 lakh cusecs of water was also released from the Valmiki Nagar barrage built on Gandak river. Earlier in the year 2003, 6.39 lakh cusecs of water was released from this barrage.

It has been raining in Nepal and Bihar for three days

According to officials of the Water Resources Department, it has been raining continuously for three days in Bihar and Nepal. Due to which the water level of Ganga including Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, Budhi Gandak, Kamala Balan and Mahananda is increasing rapidly. After saving destruction in Nepal, the Gandak and Kosi rivers have wreaked havoc in India as well. Especially in West Champaran of Bihar, many areas of East Champaran except Jogapatti, Nautan, Gaunaha, Bagaha-1, Bagaha-2, Ramnagar, Majolia and Narkatiyaganj blocks are inundated. People living in these areas have left their homes and migrated.

Floods in Ganga Bank districts too

At present, 13 districts of the state like East Champaran, West Champaran, Araria, Kishanganj, Gopalganj, Shivhar Sitamarhi, Supaul, Siwan, Madhepura, Muzaffarpur, Purnia and Madhubani are badly affected by floods. 1.41 lakh people living in 140 gram panchayats of 20 blocks in these districts have been forced to migrate.
